Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most difficult but favored poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible variation, has increased in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha hi lo starts like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to every player. A round of betting ensues where gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. One more round of betting happens. After all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, an additional card is flipped on the turn. Another sequence of betting happens at which point the river card is flipped. The entrants must attempt to put together the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where a few entrants get flustered. Unlike Hold’em, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player has to utilize exactly three cards on the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the best hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same concept in nearly all poker games.

The lower hand is more difficult, but certainly free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that could be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no lower hand available, the high hand wins the entire pot.

Although it seems complicated at the outset, following a few hands you will be agile enough to get the fundamental subtleties of the game with ease. Since you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha hi lo provides an exciting array of wagering choices and because you have several individuals trying for the high, along with several trying for the low. If you enjoy a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
