Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 in which he liked participating in numerous card games when he was young. He found himself getting really competitive in these card games while playing his dad. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to place higher education on hold for a little while and headed to New York to participate in some big-time chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st two years were difficult as he would play many hours and lost a majority of the time. He made some additional cash by being an runner for the poker players. He theorized he could better his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to get more sleep and concentrate more on the game.

The actual improvement in his skills began when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable gamblers would often play against each other. He had access into several of the greatest players in chess. With their assistance, he would hone his strategic thinking abilities. Howard used these strategy ideas in the game of No-Limit holdem.

Howard Lederer also helped his sister Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie was a great student of poker as she would consistently be asking questions about the right way to make the proper choice. He told Annie to head out to Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker competition. She is one of the strongest women players the poker arena has ever seen. Howard Lederer headed to Sin City in 1993 and participated in cash games for the successive decade. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard made the decision to play more tournaments.
