Phil Ivey has been labeled as the greatest poker competitor in the world by most of the top professionals. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and moved to NJ before his first birthday. His papa taught him penny-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From that point on, Phil was hooked on poker and wanted to pickup every little thing he possibly could about the game. He would tell his grandparents that he was planning on being a professional poker player. Phil didn’t allow the adverse feedback from others kill his dream of being one of the strongest poker players on the planet.
Phil began competing seriously after getting a false ID with the name of Jerome. He practiced his skills at the poker rooms in Atlantic City. The first few years for Phil were a learning opportunity and coming away with a win was not a normal outcome at the time. Phil made his mark at the 2000 World Series of Poker where he made two final tables and came away with his 1st WSOP bracelet, in a two dollar, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the closing table he defeated quite a few of the well known pros including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Phil made a decision to take his game to the next level and headed out west to Vegas. Phil continues to play in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players on the planet. Phil credits his success to dedication and a continuing love for the game of poker. Phil states that he is picking up skills every day and is very abashed about his success. Phil knows he makes errors in each session of poker and always strives to improve.
Despite the fact that Phil has come first in some large tournaments, he prefers destroying money games on a normal basis.
