Howard Lederer lived in a family of five in which he enjoyed gambling on various card games when he was young. He discovered himself becoming very aggressive in the above-mentioned card games as he was competing against his father. After finishing secondary school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a little while and moved to New York to compete in some big-time chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were difficult as he played many hours and don’t win most times. He earned some extra cash by becoming an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He judged he might improve his game by balancing his life away from poker. He made an effort to acquire more rest and concentrate more on poker.

The real improvement in his skills happened when he began playing at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the greatest gamblers would frequently challenge each other. He had access into a number of the greatest minds in chess. With their help, he would tweak his strategic thinking skills. He used these strategy concepts in the game of No-Limit Texas Holdem.

Howard also assisted his sister Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie was an excellent student of poker as she would consistently be asking questions about the right way to make the proper choice. Howard told Annie Duke to move out to Sin City and play in the World Series of Poker competition. She is one of the strongest female players the poker arena today. He headed to Vegas in 1993 and participated in money games for the following 10 years. When the WPT gained popularity, he made the decision to play more tournaments.
