Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 where he enjoyed playing numerous card games when he was young. He found himself becoming very aggressive in the above-mentioned card games as he was competing against his dad. After finishing high school, Howard decided to place higher education on hold for a little bit and moved away to New York City to play some big-time chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were tough as he played extensive hours and do not win most times. He earned some extra cash by being an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He judged he could boost his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to get more sleep and focus even more on poker.

The definite advancement in his game happened when he began gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would frequently play against each other. He had access into a few of the greatest minds in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would hone his strategic thinking skills. He applied these strategy ideas to the game of No-Limit Texas Holdem.

Howard also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn poker. She was a superb student of the game as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the proper decision. Howard told Annie to move out to Vegas and compete in the WSOP competition. Annie is one of the strongest women players the poker world has ever seen. Howard headed to Las Vegas in 1993 and participated in cash games for the following decade. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, Howard decided to participate in more tournaments.
